Back from Mauritius, we were able to test for you several luxury establishments in Mauritius. Of course, most of the 4 and 5 stars of the island enjoys a geographical location and high quality services, however we have fallen for three establishments that offer a real “more” compared to other hotels, each for different reasons.
To the northwest, Angsana-Balaclava, the pearl of Turtle Bay.
The north of the island concentrates a large part of the hotel offer of Mauritius in particular between Trou aux Biches and Grande Baie. If the beaches are beautiful in this part of the island, you are unfortunately far enough away from other great places to visit on the island and the concentration of tourists can put off some. By cons, the small town of Balaclava for its part in a rather different configuration. We stay in the North West, but we are much closer to Port Louis and we can even easily reach the south. This is where Angsana, a hotel nestled in Turtle Bay, stands in the mind of Voyageur-independant.
When you arrive at Angsana, you understand immediately that you enter a luxury hotel: monumental lobby, staff to your care, rooms in the water …
We were able to test a beachfront first floor suite with private pool. Yes, private pool upstairs !!! From here, we have a magnificent view of Port Louis and the arrival of boats at the port and in the background the mountain of Le Pouce.
The hotel offers many marine activities included in the half-board package: Snorkeling, Sea Kayaking, Water Skiing. Of course, like any good 5-star self-respecting hotel, Angsana offers a SPA and high-flying care, testing the therapist’s hands is a real pleasure.
Finally, it should be noted that with only fifty rooms, Angsana is the smallest 5-star hotel on the island, a little more for the tranquility. Without question, Angsana is our favorite of North Island.
In the East Center, The Residence, Colonial luxury,
Changing geographical area and changing mood, The Residence is one of the oldest luxury hotel in Mauritius. What strikes upon arrival at the hotel is this remarkable colonial architecture, it looks like the Residence posed here for more than a century and the welcome keeps this spirit “so British” colonial. Housed in one of the most beautiful suites, we even had at our disposal the services of a butler …
Another very strong point of the Residence is its private beach which is without context one of the most beautiful of Mauritius. Of course, here too the corals have started to disappear but there are still very beautiful spots for diving and snorkeling … For the homebody, the Residence can spend several days just to walk between the giant pools, the beach fine sand, three restaurants, golf and SPA which is one of the most famous of the island.
One of the things we liked most about it is that the hotel is far enough away from all the big resorts in the North and therefore less affected by mass tourism. It is also quite close to several places that deserve a visit. The hotel offers to visit on the Ile aux Cerf on a private tour with a hydro speed, ideal for a short ride with a couple snorkeling in the middle of the ocean.
In the South-West, Lakaz in Chamarel. A lodge in the heart of the lush forest
As has already been mentioned in many of our articles, Mauritius is a diverse island between sea, lush forest and mountains. At Lakaz in Chamarel, change of scenery, we are 4 km as the crow flies from the sea but in the middle of a preserved Nature. For us, this is the address not to be missed if you are sensitive to green tourism … but not forgetting the pleasures of luxury. In the middle of a tropical garden, you will be able to benefit from a magnificent view on the lagoon of the West and between two walks to bathe in your private swimming pool, isolated among the trees. The small restaurant of the hotel is also of high quality with a nice wine list of South Africa. You are in love, in love with nature, in search of tranquility, Lakaz is the place to be in Mauritius!
